Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Grounds Maintenance Technician is responsible for the maintenance and improvements to all Academy grounds, athletic fields, and hardscape systems throughout the campus.

 

Hours/Shift/Work Schedule:  This position is a full time non-exempt position.  Hours worked: M-F, 7:00am – 3:30pm, Hours may include occasional nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • May participate in the planting, watering, fertilization and treatment of plants, trees, shrubbery and flowers throughout the campus grounds.
  • Responsible for maintenance of all athletic fields (mowing, weed control, fertilization, seeding, top-dressing, and field marking).
  • Mow grass, thin, trim, and removes trees.
  • Mix and apply chemical herbicides and pesticides.
  • Participate in winter snow removal operations.
  • Perform minor maintenance on department equipment.
  • Maintain hand and power tools.
  • May perform minor cement or asphalt patching on sidewalk and parking lots.
  • May erect regulatory and information signing.
  • May maintain planting and treatment records.
  • Periodically support the work of building maintenance staff.
  • Daily outdoor trash pickup and removal.
  • Maintain mowers and tractors.
  • Repair damage to turf areas on campus.
  • Daily completion of work hour time reports.
  • Responsible for daily Academy owned vehicle inspections
  • Required to report to work during emergency conditions and may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties as necessary.
  • Perform work safely in accordance with department safety procedures and the IMSA safety program. Operate equipment safely and report any unsafe work condition or practice to supervisor.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five (5)  year’s experience in horticulture, sports turf, landscape repair or a related field
  • Illinois Pesticide Operators license.
  • High school diploma.  Completion of 16 semester hours of college level in horticulture, sports turf, irrigation or a related field. 
  • Some knowledge of small engine repair.
  • Valid drivers license

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten (10)  years experience in horticulture, turf maintenance, irrigation repair or a related field
  • S. in horticulture, sports turf, irrigation or a related field.

 

EQUIPMENT & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Knowledge of grounds equipment including: mowers, sprayers, power mechanical tools, and all types of vehicles.
  • Upkeep and repair of all equipment and tools.
  • Required to be scheduled on call from October to April to aid in snow emergencies.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, work on hands and knees if necessary.
  • Uniform appearance must be clean and in good wear. No holes, tears or cutoffs will be allowed. Must wear solid soled shoes. No sneakers without written documentation from Physician or Building and Grounds Manager.
  • Usually good conditions, but could be exposed to harsh weather and long hours in emergency situations.
  • Position requires extensive walking and the ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, odors or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, and dampness/humidity.
  • Required uniforms supplied by the IMSA

 

COMPENSATION:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, employment-at-will position.  Annualized salary range is expected to be between $54,430.53 - $64,035.92, dependent on education level and years of experience. I
