Overview

A stipended role for the Center for AI role for the Center for AI under the guidance of the Chief Public Affairs & Development Officer. The AI Research Mentor Lead is a specialized leadership role that empowers IMSA students to engage in meaningful, high-level research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). This role fosters opportunities for students to pursue inquiry, innovation, and ethical exploration of AI technologies.

Through expert mentorship, the role is instrumental in developing the next generation of thoughtful, socially responsible AI practitioners and critical thinkers. This position is expected to work approximately 10 hours/week.

Responsibilities

  1. Student Mentorship & Research Guidance
  • Mentor students conducting original AI/ML research projects, supporting topic selection, methodology development, and ethical considerations.
  • Guide students pursuing independent studies and external research partnerships.

  1. Dissemination of Research Outcomes
  • Support students in publishing research findings in academic journals, conference proceedings, and online platforms.
  • Coordinate presentations and posters to showcase student AI/ML research achievements at IMSAloquium.

  1. Research Program Development
  • Assist in the development of new research-based learning experiences that emphasize interdisciplinary exploration of AI and Machine Learning.

 

  1. Model Ethical AI Use
  • Serve as a role model for ethical AI use through mentorship and daily practice.
  • Complete a recognized certification in AI as part of ongoing professional development.

 

In addition to the individual responsibilities outlined below, the AI Research Mentor Lead attends regular AI Lead Team Meetings.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
  • Completion (or willingness to complete) a recognized certification in AI, Machine Learning, or Responsible AI as part of professional development.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring or teaching students in AI/ML research in an education environment.
  • Strong technical expertise in core areas of AI and Machine Learning, including algorithm development, data analysis, model evaluation, and ethical frameworks.
  • Familiarity with programming languages and tools commonly used in AI/ML research (e.g., Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Jupyter Notebooks).
  • Understanding of research methodologies in computational sciences and the ability to guide students through the full research lifecycle.
    • Capacity to build or co-develop interdisciplinary research opportunities that connect AI to societal challenges, humanities, and STEM disciplines.
  • Willingness to assist in designing new AI/ML research-based learning experiences that support IMSA’s mission of inquiry and innovation.
  • Strong mentoring and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with a diverse range of learners and guide them through complex material.
  • Experience working collaboratively within teams and participating in institutional initiatives such as lead team meetings and cross-departmental efforts.
  • Commitment to modeling ethical AI practices and promoting socially responsible approaches to technology.
  • Familiarity with frameworks addressing AI bias, fairness, data privacy, and equitable access to research opportunities.

 

Compensation: This position pays a stipend of $16,000 for the 25-26 school year. It is not benefits eligible. At the end of the school year, we will reevaluate if this position will continue into the following school year.
