Overview

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is actively seeking applications for the position of Adjunct Part-time Computer Science Specialist. Dependent on the incumbent’s background and experience, the individual may conduct outreach programing, support student research in our Center for Artificial Intelligence, or teach a Computer Science class. We encourage individuals who enjoy making a difference in the lives of talented high school students and who have advanced knowledge in Computer Science or related field to apply. Remote and hybrid options may be available based on specific assignment(s).

 

The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10–12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program. It also serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The successful candidate may be responsible for, any of the following:

  • Lead and support student research in our Center for Artificial Intelligence
  • Create Computer Science-based professional development for educators or other constituents
  • Teach Computer Science class(es)
  • Guiding and tutoring students in differing capacities
  • Participating in the department’s development work
  • Close collaboration with colleagues
  • Participating in regular department meetings, development programs, and community development days
  • Participating in activities that support the Academy’s programs
  • Participating in external professional organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, or a related field
  • Effective communication with students, staff, and parents
  • Active participation in a collaborative team environment
  • Engagement in reflective professional practice
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a team environment with the ability to function diplomatically and communicate effectively with colleagues, administrators, students, parents, and the public
  • An appreciation and understanding of working with diverse populations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum design, research, or professional development
  • High school or college level teaching experience

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.  Substantial time is spent working on a computer.  This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities. However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Rate of pay is commensurate with training and experience expected at this level of employment. Due to the adjunct nature, this position is not benefits eligible.
