  • Overview

    Responsible for benefits administration, employee relations, training, performance management, onboarding, policy implementation, recruitment/employment, legal compliance, diversity and inclusion accountabilities, employee engagement and providing excellent customer service to the Academy.


    • As subject-matter expert, administers Academy-wide employee benefits programs including health, dental, life, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, short/long term disability, workers compensation, flexible spending and retirement; presents benefits information and changes to new and existing employees
    • Leads development of benefits orientations and other benefits training for employees
    • Remains up to date on processes and changes to State of Illinois benefit offerings and ensures compliance with changing federal and state regulations and legislation that may affect employee benefits including FMLA, HIPPA, ADA, SURS, etc.
    • Assists new and existing employees with benefits enrollment/changes
    • Processes and maintains necessary information in required databases (e.g. HRMS, SURS, CMS, Morneau-Sheppell, payroll, timesheets); compiles reports from various databases/systems
    • Ensures compliance with all legal requirements of various employee benefit offerings
    • Maintains and pays necessary benefit rosters/bills
    • Reconciles GL benefit accounts as necessary
    • Coordinates open enrollment and maintains documentation for all employee benefit offerings
    • Oversees all employee leaves and ensures compliance with policy and procedures
    • Oversees the tuition reimbursement program
    • Manages employee workers’ compensation benefits
    • Tracks HR metrics and prepare monthly HR dashboard
    • Prepares/submits and requests/compares HR salary and benefits data as appropriate for/from state and external requests (e.g. ISLs, ISBE, IBHE, CUPA, AAUP surveys)
    • Serves as the internal HR liaison to Information Technology and Payroll Services, as well as the external liaison to SURS, CMS, 403b providers and other HR vendors
    • Maintains up-to-date non-exempt job descriptions
    • Conducts recruitment effort for all non-exempt personnel and conducts new-employee orientation
    • Serves as resource person for non-exempt staff (and their managers) regarding interpretation of policies and procedures
    • Manages hiring process for non-exempt positions by posting position vacancies, reviewing resumes, coordinating interviewing process and performing reference checks.
    • Assists in the development, revision and implementation of personnel policies and procedures.
    • Assists in employee relations counseling and exit interviewing
    • Assists in administering the compensation program; manages the performance evaluation program for non-exempt employees.
    • Prepares required State of Illinois reports
    • Other duties as assigned


    • BS/BA or equivalent work experience
    • Proficiency with a HRMS or other databases
    • Proficiency with Word Processing and Spreadsheets
    • Exceptional analytical, organization and communication skills
    • Superior tact and employee relations skills
    • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time; ability to prioritize tasks, complete in a timely manner and work with limited supervision



    • Prior HR experience
    • Experience in an academic setting
    • Master’s degree in HRM or related area
    • SHRM or other HR industry certification



    Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This is sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: sitting, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity.
