    The faculty and staff of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® invite you to join us in shaping and implementing the next generation of innovative and engaging learning experiences.  IMSA is actively seeking applications for the position of Maintenance Mechanic, This position is responsible for maintenance and repair of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, minor construction, assisting with HVAC systems, and snow removal across the campus.  This position reports to and is evaluated by the Facilities Operations Manager.



    The internationally recognized Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy® (IMSA) develops creative, ethical leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  As a teaching and learning laboratory created by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically talented Illinois students (grades 10-12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program, and it serves thousands of educators and students in Illinois and beyond through innovative instructional programs that foster imagination and inquiry. IMSA also advances education through research, groundbreaking ventures and strategic partnerships. (


    This individual will be responsible for but not be limited to:

    • Assist with Air handling unit maintenance and repair
    • Boiler operation and repair
    • A/C absorption chiller operation
    • Assist with air conditioning roof top or package unit maintenance and repair
    • Computerized heating/cooling management system
    • Plumbing, electrical and carpentry projects & repair
    • Swimming pool operation
    • Preventive maintenance for systems across the Academy
    • Emergency repairs
    • Daily work order response
    • General Academy owned equipment maintenance and repair
    • Welding, brazing, soldering
    • Other duties as assigned



    The required skills and experience for this position include:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent
    • 3 years experience in the trades or technical school
    • Previous work experience in non-journeyman level work including but not limited to; high voltage electricity, carpentry, and plumbing
    • Knowledge of:
      • Pneumatic controls
      • Power tools and small hand tools
      • Pumps related to hydronic equipment and systems
      • Pool maintenance
    • Ability to communicate with IMSA Community in following through with work orders and emergency repairs
    • Ability to communicate with contractors to assure service work is done in a timely and professional manner
    • Ability to adapt to a work environment that requires learning and acquisition of skills to successfully fulfill the responsibilities and duties of maintenance mechanic
    • Ability to work independently and initiate tasks and projects
    • Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies as related to performance responsibilities
    • Ability to work irregular schedules, including evening and/or weekend hours
    • Ability to use a computer



    • Operates standard maintenance equipment
    • Receives, processes, and provides visual and verbal information
    • Occasional irregular hours
    • Provides timely response to externally imposed conditions and deadlines
    • Responds to concurrent, multiple, non-related issues
    • Read and comprehend safety related information and general instructions in equipment use
    • Work performed outside and in extreme temperatures
    • Regular bending, kneeling climbing stairs and working on ladders at significant heights
    • Regular lifting up to 75 lbs




    The position of Second Shift Maintenance Mechanic is a full-time, 12-month, employment-at-will position.  Beginning hourly rate is $21.30.  The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers an excellent comprehensive benefits package including health and retirement benefits with the State University Retirement System.  The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers’ Retirement System of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
